REmote BALANCE motor learning in Extended reality
This project develops an intelligent XR-based approach for personalised balance training in older adults, using data-driven adaptation. Age-related declines in postural control increase fall risk and threaten independent living, while existing telerehabilitation often relies on explicit, video-led instructions and sustained cognitive attention. This project shifts towards an environment-based approach in which carefully designed visual and sensory cues implicitly guide movement and promote motor adaptation.
Using accessible XR and AI-driven dynamic difficulty adjustment, we will develop a proof-of-concept system in which adaptive behaviour emerges through interaction rather than verbal instruction. The feasibility study will evaluate usability in the home, acceptability, and measurable changes in balance behaviour, while generating high-quality pilot data for future model development.
The collaboration combines VUB’s expertise in physiotherapy, ageing, motor control, and rehabilitation with Warwick’s strengths in software engineering, digital health infrastructure, and remote delivery. Together, the partners address the gap between motor learning theory and its implementation in remote care.
Ultimately, the project aims to advance less cognitively demanding, engaging, and scalable approaches to remote rehabilitation for older adults.
